Lincoln, Nebraska on a home game day is unreal. I am so far out of my element in the best way.
The Sea of Red is not an exaggeration. I swear this place would show up on a picture from the moon.
It is loud and beautiful outside. The people are nice, and the stadium is âdryâ so everyone is either sober or sobering up as the evening goes by. We got here early and tailgated with the company Carter buys his corn seed from. He held my hand the entire time and introduced me as his girlfriend to everyone we met. I might have been imagining it, but the prideful tone of his voice made my knees a little weak.
We are at our seats now, they're right on the forty-yard line and nearly front row, so we can see everything.
I am looking around, taking it all in. The red and white on everyoneâs shirts. The yellow corncob hats a few people are toting around. The air is crisp, and the vibe is fun.
âIncredible, isnât it?â
Carterâs question sweeps across my cheek as he leans in to ask it. It's not loud enough to not be able to simply talk but I truly do not mind the closeness. He has been like this all day. Near. It is as if he simply can't help himself. Like his being right next to me, touching me, is unstoppable and the itch to feel me cannot be scratched; a kiss on the cheek, a hand on my back, linking arms⦠I love it.
I turn, our eyes locking and our noses brushing. âItâs perfect.â
He leans in the rest of the way and kisses me. Kisses me probably too earnestly for a football stadium but I don't say anything. How could I when he's consuming my breath, my thoughts, my soul. I kiss him back. I match him. His hands rest on my hips, fisting my shirt, pulling me closer to him. I slide my hands up his strong arms and over his broad shoulders. I frame his face, resting them on his stubbled cheeks, running my thumbs over the dark scruff.
âDo you ever grow this out?â I ask as he rests his lips on my brow.
âItâs been a while.â His mouth doesnât leave my skin.
I hum in response.
âThink I should, sweetheart?â
I nod against his chest, lightly, so as not to disturb the makeup I carefully applied today. âAbsolutely would not complain about a beard, baby.â
He pauses mid chuckle, his chest no longer vibrating against me.
I look up and meet his darkened blue eyes.
âI'm torn between begging you to call me that all the time, and also pleading for you to not call me that again until I can get us to a place of privacy.â His voice is deeper than usual and rasps through the air between us. The air that is now plenty charged.
I swallow, blinking my wide eyes at Carter. âNoted,â I say quietly, and a little too breathy.
I feel like the sun is beating down on me with how hot I just got.
